In 2010, Amanda Ruiviejo was working as the Latina Outreach Coordinator at the Domestic Violence and Child Advocacy Center in Cleveland, Ohio, when the humanitarian organization CAMO (Central American Medical Outreach) contacted her about a project to build a domestic violence center in Honduras.
Ruiviejo, a Northeast Ohio resident born in Torello, Spain, left her job and went to Honduras for six weeks in November 2010. When she returned home, she realized she needed more time, and developed a plan with CAMO to go back — this time for a year.
