Dr. Cynthia Alvarez, wife of neurosurgeon Dr. Roberto Alvarez, expressed an interest in starting a dermatology program for the poor through CAMO. As a dermatologist she saw the need for this service and hoped to provide a suitable means for delivering aid. CAMO started the program in 2010.
Through her first series of patients alone, Dr. Alvarez found over 10 melanomas, which could have been fatal had those instances not been diagnosed. Within the first year, over 270 patients were seen through this program, and the numbers are continuing to increase. However, the cost of running and providing care in this area is incredibly expensive and most patients cannot afford what is necessary for a cure.
