Prosthetics Workshop
CAMO operates a fully functioning
prosthetics lab in Santa
Rosa that serves patients in need of prosthetic limbs, orthotics and braces.
Former first lady Mary de Flores made a special request to CAMO to provide
prosthetic limbs to needy Hondurans and in 1999 with a volunteer prostetist
that request was met. Today, the lab is staffed with a trained Honduran
prostetist and prosthetic technician and sees over 600 patients a year.
The lab is located on the hospital grounds and in conjunction with the
local rehabilitation center, forms part of an integrated program with the
orthopedic department of the hospital and the physical therapy and skills
training services at Teletón. By delivering equipment, education
and therapy to the patients, the program drastically improves the patient’s
quality of life. Without assistance, the patient’s ability to participate
fully in their communities is hampered and often their health is put at
risk. With access to donated equipment and consultations, our patients
are often able attend school, obtain reliable employment and improve their
physical condition. In our partnership at the local hospital and therapy
center, patients have a place to go with their referral for a brace or
wheel-chair, which before CAMO’s program, went unfulfilled, as did their
hope to retrieve their independence.

Ways to Help:
-
CAMO receives prosthetic limbs and uses the viable parts to help supply
the prosthetic lab. If you know of anyone who would be interested in donating
prosthesis please contact us.
-
This is an excellent program that requires equipment, educational support
and funding. CAMO encourages community groups to take on a special project
in conjunction with the prosthetics workshop.
-
For those individuals or groups in the NE Ohio area, there are always opportunities
to volunteer sorting and packing supplies.
