Honduran Women Breast Screening: A Legacy of Self-Love

At 73, a mother in Mercedes shares a story that is also familiar to her two daughters, both in their late 40s. All three women are homemakers, and until recently, they shared a common reality: none had ever received a mammogram.

The three women traveled together from western Honduras to CAMO. They arrived carrying fear, doubts, and common misconceptions.

Yet, they chose to trust the medical staff.

All three completed their mammograms that day. They returned home relieved and happy with their results.

Their journey shows a key truth. Taking care of your health is a wonderful way to care for your family.

Expanding Access to Mammograms

CAMO runs mammography centers in Santa Rosa de Copán and Corquín. They offer low-cost screenings for women across western Honduras.

Between May 2024 and April 2026, CAMO performed 3,085 mammograms. Screenings grew from 1,236 in the first period to 1,849 in the second—a 50% increase.

During the past year, CAMO partnered with 13 regional organizations. These partnerships bring critical health services directly into local communities.

Real stories sit behind these impressive numbers. In 2025, doctors identified abnormalities in 9 patients. This early detection allowed these women to get fast treatment.

A mammogram offers more than a simple test result. It gives women a chance to take action and protect their future.

For María Elma, Lesly, and Karla, health care became a family legacy.
