At eight years old, a fifth-grade student at Esteban Guardiola Elementary School in Triunfo de la Cruz, Tela, already understands what it means to go without. When she sees a classmate with nothing to eat, she shares what little she has because, as she simply says, “they are hungry.”
She is one of 38 children at the school who have lost a mother, a father, or both. For many, grief has been followed by another struggle: not enough food, clothing, or school supplies, and sometimes the loss of a stable home.

One young girl recently lost her mother to dengue and now lives with family friends. Still, she dreams of becoming a nurse. Another lost the brother who had been caring for her and her three siblings. She dreams of becoming a veterinarian and caring for the marine life of Tela.
